Community Board 1 in the Bronx voted against a controversial new jail in Mott Haven Thursday night.
The vote was unanimous.
The proposal has been met with criticism from residents and elected officials who say the 24-story jail shouldn't be in a residential area.
"We need to have some parity here where we get criminal justice reform but not destroy a neighborhood that has planned for that community for 22 years. How is that fair?" said one person at the meeting.
"A recent poll was just released that showed that the majority of the New Yorkers support this plan. We know that there is also opposition. We are working hard to try to meet the needs and concerns of people in the community. We ultimately believe in the moral imperative to close Rikers Island," said Jordan Stockdale, deputy director of the Mayor's Office for Criminal Justice.
The mayor's proposal calls for the jail to be built where there is currently an NYPD tow lot.
It's part of his plan to close Rikers Island by 2027 and build a new facility in each borough except Staten Island.
The plan now goes to the borough president's office.
The City Council will have the final say.
