NEW YORK - A video posted on Facebook shows a group pouring paint on the Black Lives Matter mural in Harlem as onlookers yell in outrage. The vandals live-streamed Saturday night with the caption "It's time to take our country back" and the hashtags #jesusmatters and #Trump2020.
A woman posting under the name Bevelyn Beatty uploaded videos of herself and others defacing the mural in front of Trump Tower, and another in Brooklyn over the weekend.
"I think that woman is out of place. She has no right here," said Ian Smith, reacting to the attack on the Harlem mural.
"It just kind of upset me to see something to make everybody come together, someone tried to damage" said another New Yorker.
Workers have repainted all three murals. It's the latest in a string of attacks on murals across the city.
On Monday, Mayor Bill de Blasio had a message.
"Just let it be, and let it be a sign of progress," he said. "But if someone tries to deface it, that's an offense. They'll be arrested, and we will repaint it again."
Outside Trump Tower, there was some support for the mayor's approach.
"Absolutely, it's more than worth keeping," said Dashlee Pettawat.
"One of the things that I was struck by is just how much I appreaciate the police being here and protecting it," said another woman.
Some also wished the vandalism directly towards Black Lives Matter around the city would stop.
