AUSTIN, Texas — Bad weather expected overnight Tuesday into Wednesday morning may lead to more power outages and stalled restoration efforts as already compromised trees and power lines are threatened.
Rain showers and scattered thunderstorms are forecasted for Tuesday afternoon and evening, some of which may be strong to severe. Along with damaging winds of up to 35 mph, the incoming weather could bring weakened tree branches from the freeze into contact with power lines, poles and transformers.
Wind gusts are starting to pick up. The weather could complicate power restoration efforts. Forecasts for Tuesday and Wednesday call for rain and thunderstorms.

“Our trees are vulnerable after the winter storm and may have broken limbs high up in their branches that cannot be seen easily,” said Juan Ortiz, director of the City’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management. “With strong wind in the forecast, additional tree limbs may fall, potentially creating further damage and causing new outages. That’s why we’re asking people to be extra attentive today, and to bear with us while we address new challenges as they arise.”
Residents are encouraged to not park their vehicles under trees, to not leave their pets and children unsupervised near trees and to be aware of your surroundings when walking outside or in the yard.
As of Tuesday morning, Austin Energy reports more than 98% of its customers have power. Austin Energy says it is ready to respond to incoming weather, and will assess any additional damage caused by Tuesday’s weather.
Austin Energy announced over the weekend that due to the complications in restoring downed power lines and the impending weather will cause power that was originally predicted to be restored fully by Friday evening to not be back until Sunday, Feb. 12.
