ASHEVILLE, N.C. – With Asheville already bouncing back from Helene, a businesswoman is still looking to lend a hand.
Our Everyday Hero is Leah Wong Ashburn, who started a campaign to raise a glass to help raise dollars to help workers in her community.
For a time after the storm, the CEO of Highland Brewing helped charities and nonprofits store and distribute crucial supplies.
Her business makes about 100 types of beer, and the money raised for one of those types of beer called Highland Haze will go to help the North Carolina Hospitality Workers Relief Fund.
It’s part of the brewery’s “Thirst For Good” campaign.
“Supporting them with some extra help with the sale of Highland Haze is going to be how we do that for six months. Every keg that we sell is going to trigger a donation,” Ashburn said.
She’s hoping to raise at least $10,000 in the campaign.
Ashburn said she can’t take all of the credit for steering the drive for donations. She gives kudos to her staff, her husband Brock, who’s the vice president of operations, and also her dad, who founded Highland Brewing.
“I am my father’s daughter, and when my dad started this company, he was always intent on making us a good neighbor, a welcome addition to the community,” she said.
Ashburn intends to carry on his tradition.
The fund Highland Brewing is donating to has raised more than $740,000 and awarded grants to more than 1,800 people.
