CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Hefty fines has been issued after UNC Chapel Hill violated the Clery Act.

  • The Clery act requires schools to keep track and report all crime on campus
  • The U.S. Department of Education says UNC did not report their crimes from 2009 to 2016.
  • This investigation was launched in 2013 after receiving complaints that the school did not do enough to help sexual assault victims

The Clery Act requires certain schools to keep track of and report all campus crime.

However, the U.S. Department of Education says UNC Chapel Hill failed to report their crimes between 2009 and 2016.

The school has been cited for nine violations. These include not keeping students informed of threats in a timely manner and not handling sexual assault cases properly.

According to the Interim Chancellor, he will enact changes such as campus police training and hiring a Vice Chancellor that will help the school comply.

Some students say they are disappointed.

Farnosh Mazandarani said, “The Clery Act exists specifically for that if they're violating that then that creates an unsafe...not only school environment but because I'm a graduate student…a work environment as well.”

The investigation was launched by the Education Department in 2013 after several complaints about the school not doing enough to help sexual assault victims.
