WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — The N.C. Department of Transportation says the largest parts of the Winston-Salem beltway will be completed by fall.
The purpose of the multilane freeway is to relieve traffic on U.S. 52 and increase connectivity in the area.
“This project is going to make a tremendous difference,” said N.C. Department of Transportation engineer Pat Ivey.
The project is made up of seven phases, and they will finish the fifth by the end of the year.
“We are trying to wrap up all the final paving, drainage, signing, traffic signal — all that,” Ivey said.
Ivey says planning on this $1.5 billion project began in the 1960s.
The Beltway is scheduled to open to the public in 2027.
