CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Women's History Month celebrates the contributions women are making worldwide.

It's also a time to remind all young girls they're becoming great women, too!

What You Need To Know

  •  Women's History Month celebrates the contributions of women worldwide

  •  A dance instructor says it's a perfect time to remind young girls they're becoming great women, too

  •  The instructor is inspiring young girls to walk in their greatness, on and off the dance floor

Michael 'Rell' Atkins, the CEO and founder of Sxxth Sxnsx LLC, a dance and entertainment company in Charlotte, is using the arts to uplift young girls, so they're inspired to soar higher, on and off the dance floor.

Atkins is from New York and served in the military, but his heart was always in music and other art forms.

After he left the military, he made his way to Charlotte, a place he calls a creative space for artists.

"I started being more into the Charlotte community," Atkins said.

He then launched Sxxth Sxnsx, a performance and entertainment company for artists like himself.

His company assists My Angel's Dance Company, a youth majorette competition team, with rehearsals.

My Angel's is made up of young girls, ranging in ages 3-17, who train in various dance styles including hip hop and technique.

Every week, one of the girls is recognized as the "Angel of the Week," spotlighting the dancer for her hard work, such as excelling in the classroom or memorizing the dance routines.

The chosen angel then has a moment to shine during a freestyle session.

Atkins says this recognition is teaching the girls to celebrate their wins and be great inside and outside the dance space walls.

Atkins says each of the dancers has the power to impact someone's life like the women in his life did for him.

"Even though I am a male, I grew up around a lot of female aspirations, where I seen powerful strong females make it happen like my grandmother," Atkins said. "She always made sure I ate. She took care of me, so females are close to my heart."

My Angel's Dance Company owner and director My Angel Mitchell says it's important for her dancers to be around artists like Atkins who uplift them and embrace their creativity.

"We want them to be better than when they came in," Mitchell said. "We want them to be expanding and growing, leaving with confidence and new skills. If they learn something new, it makes us feel like we doing a great job as coaches."

Atkins says his company will always offer a safe space for the youth, surrounded by mentors they can lean on.

"They understand we're all here for them and we're all one big happy family," Atkins said.
