GREENSBORO, N.C. — Some basketball fans got to spend their school day Thursday at the ACC Women's Basketball Tournament at the Greensboro Coliseum.
Libby Womack and her fourth grade class joined thousands of other students for day two of the tournament.
Womack’s favorite team is Wake Forest. Her mom, Andrea Womack, said although their favorite team is not playing, Libby Womack wanted to come out and cheer on the other North Carolina teams.
“To support the ACC, our local teams in Carolina, and then to be with the kids, this is a great opportunity that they get to come out here for this,” Andrea Womack said.
She said women’s sports holds a special place in her heart, and she's happy to share it with her daughter.
“I grew up with tickets to basketball, and now my mother takes them to see the girls basketball all season,” Womack said.
According to UN Women, media coverage of women's sports has nearly tripled since 2019.
And Nielsen reports that last year's NCAA Women's Basketball Championship drew just under 19 million viewers, setting a record and also outdrawing the men's championship game (14.2) by more than four million viewers.
The women’s ACC continues through the weekend with the conference championship game scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday.
