DAYTON — There is a lot of football history at Archbishop Alter High School in Kettering.

Between state championships, and dozens of players going off to play in college and some even in the NFL. But there’s no former Knight that has had as much success as Joe Thuney.

What You Need To Know

  • Joe Thuney is an Alter grad and is now an offensive lineman with the Chiefs

  • This will be Thuney's sixth Super Bowl appearance- he's won two with the Patriots and two with the Chiefs

  • Alter head coach Ed Domsitz says Thuney is a great example to his players and his legacy at Alter is strong

Alter head football coach Ed Domsitz is no stranger to winning.

“It took me awhile to get this in my career,” Domsitz said of his state championship ring. “So I’m not shy about wearing it.”

But he’s the first to admit it takes great players to win a state championship.

“We had three pretty good teams with Joe Thuney," Domsitz said.

In fact, both of Domsitz’s state championships at Alter had Thuney on the roster

Now, 14 years after he graduated from Alter, the offensive lineman is going to the Super Bowl with the Chiefs. But it’s not his first, and not even his second, trip to the big game.

“I think this will be six coming up,” Domsitz said. “He’s won two in New England and two in Kansas City. So that’s four Super Bowl championships. That’s a dream career.”

“He means a lot," Domsitz said. "His legacy is pretty evident here at Alter.”

Thuney’s championship ways started in these halls.

“It would be sort of a surprise if he wasn’t going," Domsitz said.

Domsitz has watched his career unfold ever since, clipping his accolades alongside his other former players- so he can share the stories with his current team.

“He is a good example of especially when I’m trying to get offensive linemen,” Domsitz said. “Offensive linemen, they always want to play defense. Well, I told them two of the biggest names we’ve ever had play football here: Joe Thuney and Nick Mangold made quite a bit of money playing offensive line.”

Thuney has continued to make history.

“Joe was the first player in the history of the league in his first three years to go to three Super Bowls,” Domsitz said.

His biggest fan will be back at home in Kettering.

“It would be tough to root against him,” Domsitz said.
