LOUISVILLE, Ky.-- One of Louisville's own, 12-year-old Leo Tobbe, is one of 45 young students in the world selected to write for Scholastic in their Kids Press Corps. The seventh grader is an aspiring journalist, who says he's curious about his surroundings and isn't afraid to ask a lot of questions; that's the recipe for a successful reporter.

Tobbe feels he can help his friends and classmates sort through life around them, as he acts as young journalist, as he explains, "I have a feeling that a lot of my peers have the same questions that I do and have the same curiousity that I do, but are too afraid to ask questions."

  • Louisville's Leo Tobbe, 12, is a seventh grader at Louisville Classical Academy who's one of 45 students in the world selected to write for the Scholastic Kids Press Corps.
  • The aspiring journalist's articles will be published online and in the Scholastic magazine.
  • One article has already been published, on the importance of youth voter engagement. The next he's working on will cover Generation Ali.

Tobbe feels honored and accomplished to have been selected for the Kids Press Corps. Read his first article, titled 'Voting Is for Winners' here.

"I think it's really great that kids can have a chance to read news through the perspective of someone who might know a little more how they perceive it. It's just seen through a different perspective," Tobbe says. "I am thrilled with the idea of it... it's just something that I never thought would really happen."

Tobbe wants to be respected and taken seriously by adults. Although there's recently negativity towards the media, especially from key American politicians, Tobbe's not dissuaded from pursuing a career reporting.

"I feel like there's a lot of unnecessary negative energy that's being put towards the press. It can be... quite frankly, hurtful to journalists when they're just expressing the things that people told them," he says.
