In anticipation of the implementation of congestion pricing tolling, a city councilman is urging a crackdown on fraudulent license plates across the five boroughs.

Councilman Oswald Feliz recently introduced two bills aimed at intensifying penalties for individuals caught using or distributing counterfeit paper plates, which are used to illegally circumvent tolls and traffic cameras.

“The fake plates are being used almost as a license to break all of our rules and our traffic laws, including speeding red light parking rules, evade tolls, but also to commit major crimes,” he said during an appearance on “Mornings On 1” Thursday.

He said he’d also like to see the federal government step in to crack down because of the interstate nature of the fraud, which often involves using out-of-state counterfeit plates.

MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber has said the tolling system cannot work if there is no crackdown and the agency is doing its part.

"The MTA cops have been - have a parking lot full of Mercedes and Bugattis, of people who did not pay their tolls and who have their cars impounded. We're going to keep doing it,” he said in a "Morning On 1" interview Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the NYPD has reported an overwhelming number of cars with fake plates filling their parking lots to capacity. Police said that even if all vehicles with counterfeit plates were towed from city streets, they lack sufficient storage space for those cars.
