1. Texas House committee approves voucher bill in meeting without public livestream
The Texas House Committee on Public Education approved House Bill 2, which would increase schools’ per pupil funding by $395. However, the bill has a component that some members oppose because it fails to safeguard schools from potential budget cuts resulting from property tax reduction efforts.
A new bill, House Bill 3, passed along party lines. It provides funding for education savings accounts, which allow students to use public funds for private school.
2. 40 allegedly linked to Tren de Aragua gang arrested in Texas
Over 40 people, including minors allegedly linked to the Venezuelan transnational gang Tren de Aragua, were apprehended in a collaborative effort by the Hay’s County Sheriff’s Office, Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), FBI, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Homeland Security.
A Hays County residence suspected of being used by Tren de Aragua members was searched under warrant by the sheriff’s office and DPS.
3. Transgender teacher in North Texas resigns after facing death threats
A transgender teacher who received death threats after her place of work was exposed online has resigned from her job at a North Texas high school.
Far-right social media account Libs of TikTok shared a video of Rosalyn Sandri, 33, on X to its 4.3 million followers, revealing that she was a teacher at Red Oak Independent School District.
