On Friday, Texas A&M University announced that its Board of Regents unanimously voted for Hegar to be the sole finalist for the position.

Hegar, a Republican, was elected comptroller back in 2014 and has since won reelection twice in 2018 and 2022. The position, which serves a four-year term, is Texas’ chief financial officer, and the comptroller’s office collects the taxes and fees owed to the state.

Hegar also previously served as both a state representative and state senator.

“The Board is confident that Glenn Hegar is ready to usher in the next era of excellence at The Texas A&M University System,” said Bill Mahomes, chairman of the board, in a news release. “Hegar grasps the unique breadth and depth of the System’s impact on every corner of Texas through its eight state agencies and 11 universities. We, as members of the Board of Regents, are eager to see what he will accomplish.”

Before the board can finalize its decision, state law mandates a 21-day comment period. After that, the board will vote to give the final approval.

Hegar would be succeeding Chancellor John Sharp, who is Texas A&M’s longest serving chancellor, with almost 14 years at the position. Sharp announced he would step down on June 30.

Hegar graduated from Texas A&M in 1993, and he earned a master’s degree and law degree from St. Mary’s University. He also earned a master of laws degree from the University of Arkansas.

Hegar, who grew up in Hockley, is a sixth-generation Texan who grew up farming land that has been in his family since the mid-1800s.

“The Board members were pleased to see its search for chancellor yield so much interest and so many qualified candidates,” Mahomes said in the release. “We thank everyone who was involved in this extensive search and selection process.”

If Hegar officially receives and accepts the position, Gov. Greg Abbott can appoint a comptroller to finish out Hegar’s term until the 2026 general election.
