LOS ANGELES — A fugitive has been added to the FBI's Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list, officials announced Thursday morning as they sought help from the public. The U.S. State Department also announced a reward in the case to aid in the capture.
Authorities said Ryan James Wedding, who is considered an international fugitive and was a former Olympian, is wanted for multiple federal violations involving a transnational drug conspiracy and murder.
“We have successfully captured 496 fugitives, mostly by soliciting and the cooperation from the public," an official said during a news conference Thursday. "And we’re here today to do the same.”
Wedding, a Canadian citizen who was living in Mexico, is wanted for allegedly running and participating in a transnational drug trafficking operation that routinely shipped hundreds of kilograms of cocaine from Colombia, through Mexico and Southern California, to Canada, and other locations in the U.S. Additionally, it is alleged that Wedding was involved in orchestrating multiple murders in furtherance of these drug crimes.
“He was famous for competing in Canada in 2002 as an Olympic snowboarder. Ryan went from being an elite athlete to running one of the most sophisticated drug-trafficking networks in North America,” the official said.
The reward being offered is of up to $10 million for information leading to the arrest and/or conviction of Wedding.
Wedding competed for Canada in the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, authorities said.
