PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. — In the age of technology, you're at a disadvantage if you aren't connected online.
- Pinellas schools launch Spanish language Facebook page
- Page to help the Spanish speaking community stay connected
- Facebook page called: Pinellas County Schools en Espanol
This is the main reason why Pinellas County Schools created a new Facebook page for the Spanish speaking community.
“This move was a part of our overall effort to increase achievement of our English language learners, and in addition to that, to enhance communication with their families,” said Pinellas County Schools ESOL Specialist Natasa Karac.
ESOL parents say that until now, they had no reason to hit the 'like' button on the district's main social media account.
“I don’t know a lot of English so that’s why I haven’t done it,” said parent Martha Cerrito.
The district says its Hispanic demographic has increased by 10 percent in the last 10 years, and it’s expected to grow just as steadily in the next decade.
“Out of our English Language Learner population, we have 67 percent of our English language learners are Spanish speakers,” Karac said.
Through the new Facebook page, parents will be more in the know when it comes to helping their kids get ahead.
“It’s a really great idea and it's perfect for a lot of families that have trouble communicating so we can find out about more educational programs for our kids,” Cerrito said.
