MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. — A Manatee County man accused of hitting a deputy with a van in Bradenton is behind bars Tuesday morning.

  • Joseph Hanold charged with aggravated battery on officer
  • He was arrested near 44th Avenue East

Joseph Hanold, 30, is charged with aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer.

Hanold was pulled over by deputies Monday evening after a scan of his license plate showed the registered owner had an outstanding warrant.

When Hanold was asked to show his hands he took off and sideswiped one of the deputies and accelerated toward another, according to the sheriff's office.  That deputy fired two shots at the car before jumping out of the way.

Hanold was eventually arrested near 44th Avenue East around 11:30 p.m.

Authorities said the registered owner of the vehicle, 50-year-old Barry Gardner, told deputies he had loaned his vehicle to Hanold.

Gardner was also arrested on his outstanding warrant.
