TAMPA, Fla. -- Wearing masks is now mandatory almost everywhere, and when students head back to school in August, most will be required to wear one all day at school.

Our crews talked to a local hairstylist who weighed in on wearing a mask for extended periods of time and she said while she hasn’t had any major issues with it, she can imagine it will be tough for the younger children at school.

Ashley Hernandez, owner of The Pink Cottage and Co., a boutique salon in South Tampa, said while her son isn’t quite old enough for pre-kindergarten, she thinks wearing a mask could be an issue.

“It's a little bit more difficult, because he is three-years-old, to keep a mask on a toddler. He'll definitely be playing with it,” said Hernandez.

Hernandez is now selling masks in the boutique at her salon, too, something that’s a first in her 10 years or doing hair.

Ultimately, though, she said if wearing a mask keeps people safe and healthy, that’s all that matters.

“I honestly don't mind if that's going to help this move smoother, but it hasn't been a problem for me at all,” said Hernandez.

The American Academy of Pediatrics advises parents of younger students to start practicing wearing masks at home now before school starts. Pediatricians also recommend talking through any fears or concerns about wearing masks.
