PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. — Neighbors in Clearwater are concerned about speeding on a residential street.
When out walking her dogs, Ronna Fuchs is always on the lookout.
“The ears are always open. Hearing for traffic,” Fuchs said.
That is because of the close calls she has had with cars while walking on Scotland Drive.
“They speed and don’t care,” Fuchs said.
That has been a concern for her ever since she moved into the Greenbriar neighborhood more than 15 years ago.
Plus, there are no sidewalks.
“If you’re in the road, they get close to you. And it’s like ‘C’mon man, I’m walking my dogs,’” Fuchs said.
Scotland Drive is a straightaway with no stop signs until the end of the road, which can make speeding more common.
It is also the only way for residents to get in and out of the neighborhood from Belcher Road.
Fuchs says they’ve tried for years to get Pinellas County to consider speed bumps or other traffic calming measures.
“We were told there’s no room in the budget for it. This has been going on since 2009,” Fuchs said.
Pinellas County officials said they last collected speed and volume counts on Scotland Drive in 2019. At the time, they did not identify a speeding concern.
However, they now say they’ll do a second look at the data in April.
Fuchs says more families now live in the neighborhood. She hopes to see something done before someone gets hurt.
“I don’t want to see kids get hit. There are people walking their dogs all of the time. I don’t want to see them get hit,” Fuchs said.
