A special town meeting in Leicester draws hundreds of residents Saturday morning.
The meeting was held in a large facility in town to promote social distancing. Residents voted on whether or not the town should appropriate, borrow, or transfer funds to build a new school at a maximum cost of more than $91 million.
It would hold students from Pre-K through eighth grade. The town believes the existing school is no longer suitable.
Town Administrator David Genereux said they used a wireless voting system during the meeting.
"It's all electronic. We had it run by a third party so nobody would question how it's calculated. It really makes the town meeting run better, more efficient. It's certainly better than trying to count hands. A lot of voters said they felt if they put their hand up on a controversial topic they may be intimidated by people who support or who are against it," said Genereux.
Ultimately, the proposal for the school was shot down by residents.
