The COVID-19 vaccine will now be optional for new MTA employees starting Monday, according to officials.

“This action is in keeping with New York State and New York City practices and is aligned to the post-COVID landscape, with widespread availability of vaccines and advancements in testing and treatment,” MTA Chief Administrative Officer Lisette Camilo wrote in a statement.

The change was first reported by the New York Daily News.

“We continue to encourage vaccinations as the surest way to protect our employees and the communities we serve,” Camilo said.

The MTA stopped testing its unvaccinated transit workers for COVID-19 weekly in June.

Earlier last month, the city dropped its COVID-19 vaccine mandate for municipal workers.
