The widest point on the Hudson River, Haverstraw Bay, is around 3.5 miles across from Westchester to Rockland County. It's a good place to get a taste of New York Waterway's Shades of Autumn Fall Foliage Tours, which have returned after a break of a few years.

"We got a lot of requests for it, and it's just an amazing day out for all ages, for the entire family throughout the fall if you are looking for something different to do," said Jennifer Schuck, spokesperson for NY Waterway.

The tours run Saturdays and Sundays through Nov. 14, leaving at 10 a.m. from their terminal at West 39th Street in Manhattan, and 10:30 a.m. from Weehawken, N.J., across the river. It's a 4.5-hour trip to near Croton on Hudson, and then back, with plenty of history to learn along the way from an experienced tour guide. Another highlight is of course great leaf-peeping on the way, with peak fall colors approaching.

"The trees are really going to start rapidly changing over the next couple of weeks and we are realy going to see those colors coming out," said Schuck.

Food and beverages are available for purchase on the tours, which are a little escape from the city for the day.

"The views are endless, the chances to to take some amazing pictures are endless," said Schuck.
