Kate Doran, elections specialist with The League of Women Voters of New York City, joins “In Focus” on the last day of early voting for the Aug. 23 primaries for the U.S. House of Representatives and the State Senate.

Doran discussed the races, what’s at stake and how they’ve been encouraging people to cast their ballots and make their voices heard. The League of Women Voters of New York City is a nonprofit and non-partisan organization that promotes informed and active citizen engagement in government for nearly 103 years now.

Founded in 1919, The League of Women Voters of New York City was helped women learn how to vote. Now, it helps all New Yorkers become informed participants in government. Doran explained how the organization has developed and some of the hot-button issues this year for voters, including abortion access and gun control. Democrats in New York are organizing voters around the issues.

Doran talked about if she believes the overturning of Roe v. Wade will influence on voter turnout in these primaries and why they’re encouraging New Yorkers to call their senators to pass common-sense gun prevention reforms.

According to a Kaiser Family Foundation survey, 37% of voters are more motivated to vote with Roe v. Wade overturned. Meanwhile, The League of Women Voters of New York City is calling on Congress to act on the bipartisan background checks act.
