A section of Rockaway Beach is reopening sooner than expected.

The Parks Department says the area in question is between 96th and 98th streets.

Swimming will be allowed on a trial basis, beginning this Saturday.

Parks officials say they are able to reopen the section because there isn't a protective dune in that area.

In May, the Parks Department announced 11 blocks of the beach, from 91st to 102nd, would be closed all summer due to the sand erosion.

The Parks Department says the area could still be subject to closures based on daily conditions, as well as beachgoer usage and behavior.
