The city has reached a $1.9 million settlement with the family of Mohamed Bah, a mentally ill man killed by police.

In September 2012 police responded to a 911 call from Bah's mother at his Harlem apartment after he barricaded himself inside.

Police say Bah lunged at them with a 13 inch knife and slashed an officer's protective vest.

They unsuccessfully tried to subdue him with a taser and rubber bullets.

That's when officers fired their service weapons, hitting Bah several times, killing him.

His mother claimed that the NYPD broke protocol by forcing themselves into his apartment without a warrant, and entered with their guns drawn.

In 2017, a jury found Detective Edwin Mateo - who fired the fatal shot - guilty of using excessive force.

The city appealed that ruling.

But on Wednesday, a judge ruled in favor of Bah's family in their civil suit.

Bah's mother released a statement saying that while she is relieved by the settlement, she is still calling for Mateo, and all other officers involved in the shooting, to be fired.
