NEW YORK - Governor Andrew Cuomo is calling on the MTA board to address the homeless problem on the subway.

In a letter written to board members, Cuomo cited the MTA's own statistics which found trains were delayed 659 times in 2018 by homeless people who were walking on tracks and engaging in disruptive behavior including blocking train doors.

In the first three months of 2019 alone, there were more than 300 of those incidents.

"No one is served by leaving homeless people to sleep in terminals and on trains. I never met a homeless person who said I love sleeping in the terminal, I love sleeping on the trains. Constant noise subject to harassment, it is shelter of last resort," Cuomo writes.

The city's annual homeless census, conducted in January, estimated there are more than 2,000 people living in the subway.

It's a 23 percent jump over last year.
