The nonprofit, Word Up Community Bookshop has been closed since March 13 due to the pandemic. The Washington Heights mainstay is known for its diversity, offering books in all different languages, as well as a space for arts and culture events.

Its founder says its run by volunteers through donations and sales, but with little income coming in from online sales, its future is in doubt.

Now, those in the neighborhood are helping to raise money through a GoFundMe page to save the store.

"Even when we reopen, it's not like we can have big events and have a bunch of people in the store, so we know things will be slow even when we reopen," said the shop's founder, Veronica Liu.
