NEW YORK - A report finds homeless New Yorkers living in shelters are dying from COVID-19 at higher rates than the rest of the city.

The report by the "Coalition for the Homeless" finds homeless deaths were 61 percent higher than the citywide rate.

It suggests serious underlying health conditions, less testing, and a lack of private spaces could be to blame.

The number of COVID-19-related deaths among homeless New Yorkers in shelters in April was 157 percent higher than the number of deaths from all causes of homeless deaths compared to last year.

NY1 has reached out to City Hall for comment.
