Suki Ports is known to raise her voice about issues that are important to her. So, after an Asian-American woman was violently attacked in Hell’s Kitchen Monday, the Upper West Side resident knew she had to speak out.

“Terrible. It could be me, it could be anybody. I’ve had people call and say, ‘Be careful, stay home!’ That’s ridiculous,” she said.

Ports attended a press conference Tuesday on 43rd Street between 8th and 9th Avenues where the attack took place.

The disturbing video of the attack shows the man brutally beating and kicking the 65-year-old victim.

“I am so sick of standing here demanding something be done for my people,” said Jo-Ann Yoo, the executive director of the Asian American Federation.  “She is lying in the hospital right now. We don’t know who she is. We don’t know how to help her.”

Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer was joined by Congressman Jerry Nadler and other activists at the event.

Brewer said New Yorkers should take free bystander training from organizations like Hollaback! to learn how they can help if they ever witness an attack.

“Under every single circumstance, you must do something if you see something,” she said.

Ports agrees people have ignored the discrimination against Asian Americans for far too long.

“It’s important for all of New Yorkers to care about other New Yorkers. It doesn’t matter what color their skin, the age, the sex,” she said.

The victim sustained serious injuries, but she is expected to recover.
