NEW YORK — Over the holiday weekend, EMS crews around the city faced staffing shortages due to the omicron variant.

About 19% of the more than 4,000 workers were out sick Saturday.

An FDNY spokesman says usually about five percent of the workforce calls out on a given day.

The shortage is due to workers getting the virus or having to isolate because of exposure to someone infected.

On Christmas Day, the FDNY got about 4,500 ambulance calls, up 10% from past years.
