NEW YORK — Five NYPD officers have been shot in the five boroughs so far this year, including one who succumbed to his injuries on Friday, officials say.

Officer Jason Rivera, 22, died after 47-year-old Lashawn McNeil shot him and fellow officer Wilbert Mora, 27, after they responded to a call reporting a family dispute in Harlem Friday evening, authorities said. As of Saturday, Mora was listed in critical condition, officials said.

Friday’s shooting came just one day after a gunman shot an NYPD detective in the leg as he and other officers were serving a search and arrest warrant related to a long-term narcotics investigation at a home on Staten Island, police said.

The detective was transported to Staten Island University Hospital in stable condition, according to police. The gunman faces charges including attempted murder of a police officer.

On Tuesday night, meanwhile, a 16-year-old boy shot an NYPD officer in the right leg during a struggle that ensued after the teen refused an officer’s commands to take his hands out of his pockets in the Bronx, police said. The officer was released from the hospital not long after, according to police.

And early in the morning on New Year’s Day, an off-duty officer was shot in the head as he slept in his vehicle in the parking lot of East Harlem’s 25th Precinct station house, police said.

Officials said the bullet that hit the officer — who was listed in stable condition — appeared to have been fired from a distance. No one had been arrested in connection with that shooting as of Saturday. The officer was released from the hospital the next day.

After Friday’s shooting, Mayor Eric Adams called the incident “an attack on the city of New York.”

“It is our city against the killers,” he said. “We need Washington to join us and act now to stop the flow of guns in New York City, and cities like New York.”

At the same news briefing, NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell said she was “struggling to find the words to express the tragedy we are enduring.”

“Our department is hurting. Our city is hurting. It is beyond comprehension,” she said. “I am not sure what words, if any, will carry the weight of this moment and what we are feeling.”
