NEW YORK—Two 13-year-old boys are dead after they were pulled out of Jamaica Bay Friday, police said.

Fire officials say rescue crews responded to a call at around 11:40 a.m. at Beach 121 Street and Newport Avenue.

Both boys were recovered from the water, and were later pronounced dead at local hospitals, police said.

The NYPD said three other young people were rescued quickly by divers.

Police say the victims were not swimming in the water but were standing on a sandbar when it collapsed.

In a statement, the New York City Parks Department said, “We are saddened to hear of this incident and urge everyone to swim safely — only swim in designated areas when lifeguards are on duty no matter where you are.”
