NEW YORK - The lines for early voting wrapped around blocks across the five boroughs as voters practiced social distancing while getting out to cast their ballots.

Registered voters can cast their ballots early in New York City, from October 24 to November 1.

In Brooklyn, hundreds of voters came prepared to wait in line for a while. Some even took chairs and snacks with them to the polls.

In South Williamsburg, NY1's Lindsay Tuchman said despite the long line, it took less than an hour and a half to vote.

City council member Mark Levine tweeted a video Saturday morning of people waiting in line to vote in Manhattan.

"Hundreds in line to vote, some there for hours, ahead of opening of polls for early voting, at 168th St. in Uptown Manhattan. Line goes all way around block and now starting to wrap around second time. This is unprecedented in NYC. We are in a whole new world," said Levine.

In the Upper East Side, lines tripled, wrapping around blocks near Robert Wagner Middle School.

NY1 Senior Political Producer Mariya Abedi shared this time-lapse video of voters waiting patiently outside of Madison Square Garden. Thousands showed up to the arena to cast their vote early.

The lines also wrapped around the block at polling locations on Staten Island. At the Central Family Life Center, voters were eager and energized despite the long lines. Some of the voters who spoke to NY1 said there is an added convenience to voting ahead of time.

“Feels good. Doing my duty as a citizen, getting it done. I don’t want to wait until November 3,” said Voter Cindy Ramirez, who waited in line for the polls to open.

Congressman Max Rose headed out to the polling site Saturday morning with his wife Leigh and baby son Miles.

“The line is incredible so amazing to see folks out here expressing their right to vote and we’re going to keep on pushing for the next week and change, wherever it’s voting in person, absentee this is an unbelievable showing,” Rose said.

Some voters said they have been looking forward to this day for quite some time.

“It’s been a tumultuous year politically in this country. So we’re excited to get here and see if we can change that,” voter Melissa Mowery said.

Many people noted voting in the 2020 election is particularly crucial because of the pandemic.

“My heart breaks every night when I go to sleep try to go to sleep thinking of all the people who died alone by themselves without their loved ones and that is my main motivation at this time, and a million other reasons hopefully people come out to vote,” said voter Cheryl Cassidy.
