AUSTIN, Texas — An Austin legend has died. Sammy Allred was 84, a local radio station confirmed Thursday.

“It is with our deepest sorrow that we inform you of the death of Austin Legend Sammy Allred. We say goodbye and pay tribute to the radio veteran, humorist, and entertainer who started his radio career on KOKE FM on Friday, May 11th, beginning at 6:00 AM,” KOKE FM tweeted.

Allred, an Austin native, first gained notoriety in the early 1960s when he and partner Dewayne Smith were guests on Arthur Godfrey’s Louisiana Hayride radio program.

The two, known as Geezinslaw Brothers, started in the 1950s. The made guest appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show, The Jackie Gleason Show and the tv show "Hootenanny" as well as toured with Roger Miller and Perry Como. The duo were also regulars on Ralph Emery's radio program Pop! Goes the Country.

The pair released only one album each decade in the 1970s and 1980s. In 1979, they released an album for Willie Nelson's short-lived Lone Star Label titled "If You Think I'm Crazy Now..."

The group has appeared on Austin City Limits several times, and were inducted into the Austin Music Awards' Hall of Fame in 2005.

Allred also worked in radio on and off for over 40 years, most of the time as a personality on KVET and KOKE in Austin. He is a member of the Texas Radio Hall of Fame and won the Country Music Association Personality of the Year Award in 2006 and 2007. He's also Billboard's Personality of the Year for 1971 and 1997.
