AUSTIN, Texas — Capital Metro is handing out free masks for the safety of its customers and staff during the coronavirus pandemic.

  • CapMetro received a large donation of masks
  • Riders will receive a mask if they need one

The transit system received a donation of 40,000 surgical-style masks from community member Jonathan Coon. Cap Metro says part of that donation will be used for a customer mask distribution pilot program that begins on April 20.

CapMetro will equip its operations supervisors, train conductors, security officers and temporary cleaning crews with extra masks. They’ll give those masks out to transit customers who do not have access to one.

CapMetro says its staff and most of its customers already have access to a mask.

The City of Austin’s “Stay Home – Work Safe” order requires everyone over the age of 10 to wear a face covering in public spaces and that includes public transportation.
