TEXAS – Amid the threat of the coronavirus, Texans are skipping medical care.

A recent survey found nearly half of Americans say someone in their family has delayed care out of concerns of contracting COVID-19 at hospitals. The report also found 11 percent of those who delayed care saw their conditions get worse as a result.

Area ER doctors are urging Texans not to delay care and reassuring people it's safe to head to the hospital.

"It's a different look. When you come to the hospital today we're not allowing visitors as a precaution to reduce that risk. Everyone, both employees, staff and patients are screened thoroughly at the front door with temperature checks and questionnaires. Everyone has to have a mask on at all times in the building," said Dr. Nicholas Steinour, the emergency department medical director at Ascension Seton Medical Center Austin and a member of the Texas College of Emergency Physicians.

Dr. Steinour also says each room is cleaned from top to bottom after every patient encounter.

When it comes to treating coronavirus patients, he also says his hospital is working hard but is not overwhelmed at this point.
