AUSTIN, Texas — The coronavirus pandemic has hit the airline industry hard. Layoffs have resulted, and traffic has been down considerably at airports across the nation, including Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.

That said, there is some good travel news to report. As COVID-19 vaccines become more widely available and virus cases decline, travel options at Austin’s airport are expanding.

American Airlines has announced that beginning in May, year-round service to seven cities and seasonal service to an additional three cities will be added.

Beginning May 6 you can catch nonstop flights to Las Vegas, Nashville, Orlando, and New Orleans. On June 31 you can add Tampa, and on July 3 Raleigh will be available. Flights to Dulles International Airport begin twice a day on August 17.

Seasonal, Saturday-only flights to Aspen, San Jose del Cabo, Mexico, and Destin–Fort Walton Beach Airport in Florida are set to begin June 5.

“American is eager to expand in Austin alongside the exponential growth of the region, and we’ll be the easiest airline to do business with as we continue to grow,” said Brian Znotins, American’s vice president of network planning. “Customers have been asking for more service to Austin, and today we’re answering the call. These routes not only provide opportunities for companies to get back to business and for leisure travelers to enjoy the excitement of Austin, but also connect Central Texans with new leisure destinations they desire.”

In addition, Spirit Airlines has announced that beginning in June it will offer nonstop service from Austin to Pensacola, Florida.
