A $500,000 project is underway to help protect the water supply for people living in Niagara County.

State officials say they've begun emergency repairs on a 275-foot steel waterline in the town of Wilson.

They say the 60-year-old line on the Roosevelt Beach Bridge is deteriorating badly, placing the town's water supply at risk.

County leaders say the funding was awarded by the REDI Commission in an effort to help area's affected by years of lakeshore flooding.

The town of Wilson operates the local water system, serving nearly 6,000 people every day.
