More people in Buffalo are getting into designing and sewing their own projects with the help of a creative lab.

After leaving the corporate world, Arlene Kaye set out to get back to her roots in the fashion industry. In 2016, she opened Fashion Lab NY in Clarence. It offers classes and workshops that help open the doors of creativity for students of all ages.

"Buffalo felt like it was the right place and it felt like it was the right time in my life to do this and working with these kids, is like nothing else," said Kaye.

Now, the lab recently settled into its new location on Hertel Avenue which Kaye says plays into her vision for the company.

"It's a really, really good skill to have because if you didn't want to be like other kids in your school or something like that, you can make your own clothing and they could be like 'Oh where did you get that' and you could say 'Oh I made it.' And I feel like that's really fun," said said Elise McCarthy, a student at Fashion Lab NY.

Kaye says that by offering the opportunity to learn this timeless skill, kids will be able to take it with them into whatever career they  pursue.

"I think it's super important today to do other things that get the kids off the computers and the screens. It's kind of like having a balance. Technology is great but it's also important to still be tapping into your creativity," said Kaye.
