Nariya White spent a rainy Wednesday morning reading on her front porch.

It's a book the Buffalo 9-year-old knows by heart.

What You Need To Know

  • Nariya White, 9, has published her first book
  • A Slimetastic Day was written to inspire confidence in other kids after her own issues at school
  • The book is available on Amazon

"I want you both to listen to me. Girls are smart, beautiful and can do anything that boys can do," she read. "You two should have more confidence in yourselves."

After all, she's the author of A Slimetastic Day — featuring two girls picked on by boys in school, but decide to have a contest to prove them wrong.

"The story's about how girls and boys should be treated the same way and that girls can do anything that boys can do," Nariya said.

The soon-to-be fifth-grader at Buffalo United Charter School was inspired by her own experiences.

"I got bullied in school by these two girls," she said. "But I didn't really have to worry about it that much because I have family and friends that care about me more."

Those words of advice came straight from her parents after seeing Nariya's struggles.

"It makes you angry," said Kina White, Nariya's mother. "And you just have to find different ways to talk about these things with your kids."

With a goal of inspiring confidence and providing encouragement for other kids, Nariya started writing the book in February and worked on it throughout the spring. With her mom's help they found an illustrator, and published it through Amazon last month.

So far, they've sold more than 150 copies. It's available on Amazon for $12.99, or contacting Kina through Nariya's social media pages.

"We've had a lot of positive feedback," Kina said. "So I'm very happy that she decided to go on with this."

The book ends with the girls in the story winning, just as Nariya has in her real life story.

"I'm probably going to make another book soon," she said. "It makes me feel excited and happy."

And wise beyond her years.
