Beginning this school term, Black Lives Matter instructional lessons will be added to the curriculum for students in Buffalo Public Schools.

The country-wide initiative began four years ago with national Black Lives Matter week.

Buffalo Public Schools began looking at the program two years ago and wanted to incorporate the guiding principles of Black Lives Matter. The principles include empathy, diversity, and restorative justice.

Dr. Fatima Morrell, associate superintendent culturally & linguistically responsive initiatives, says the lessons are meant to engage all children on race relations.

"These are good concepts of principles and content for all children, the Black Lives Matter in schools curriculum and not just that we are singling out students saying this is only for Black children," said Dr. Fatima Morrell. "We know and understand that we do a disservice to white children when we do not teach them the history and culture of people of color and the children who are sitting right next to them."

The full curriculum and lesson plan is available online through the Buffalo Public schools website.
