BUFFALO, N.Y. — India Walton has declared victory in the Buffalo Democratic mayoral primary over incumbent Mayor Byron Brown and city complaint clerk Le'Candice Durham.

With 100% of districts reporting, Walton took 52% of the vote. Brown took 45% and Durham took 3%.

Mayor Brown did not concede, however, saying it's too close to call.

Brown first took office in 2006, and shares the record for the longest mayoral tenure in the history of the city.

Walton would become the first female mayor of Buffalo.

She has a background in health care, being a nurse and 1199 SEIU representative.

Walton is the founding executive director of the Fruit Belt Community Land Trust, which aims to ensure there's affordable housing in the Fruit Belt neighborhood.

She has also been seen on the front lines of social justice and Black Lives Matter protests last year in Western New York following the death of George Floyd.

Walton received several endorsements, including from the Buffalo Teachers Federation and Working Families Party.
