BUFFALO, N.Y. — M&T Bank is teaming up with 43North startup competition winner Magnusmode to launch MagnusCards, a free app dedicated to helping people with cognitive and intellectual disabilities accomplish everyday tasks like banking.

M&T Bank is the first U.S. bank to partner with Magnusmode on this technology.

What You Need To Know

  • M&T Bank partnered with Magnusmode to create card decks in the MagnusCards app

  • Magnusmode is a local company that develops technology to help people with disabilities

  • MagnusCards helps people with disabilities manage their money among other tasks

  • The app is free and can be used by anyone

Diarllo Renford, a 17-year-old Sweet Home High School graduate with autism, joined the project through his sister Stephanie Tisdale, vice President at M&T. Renford is seen throughout the card deck demonstrating step-by-step banking instructions.

“I think it can help a lot of people who are on the spectrum and I think it could help a lot of people in the future,” said Renford.

Once nonverbal, the teen is now able to set up his own bank account, fill out deposit slips and work an ATM with little help thanks to the app.

“I am so proud of him,” said Tisdale. “Having graduated high school last week, he’s come so far and to see him be involved and be so independent now is a miracle for me.”

Magnusmode developers will continue to add card decks to the MagnusCards app to help with other things like transportation, health care and shopping. Anyone can use it, but other users this has helped include people with acquired brain injuries, down syndrome, dementia and ADHD.
