Have you ever heard the phrase "in like a lion, out like a lamb"? I never had until talking to my mom this past week. It got me wondering how the phrase originated and if there's truth behind it.
There are a few theories of the origin of the "in like a lion, out like a lamb" saying. The first and most widely talked-about comes from the stars. If you’re a fan of astrology, you probably already know that during the month of March, Leo (the lion) is rising. By April, Aries (the lamb) climbs into the sky.
The second belief is a more literal one. If the month of March starts with intense weather, it will end on a calmer note. I like to believe that both theories are true. I do, however, believe that the climate in which you live plays a big part.
In Western New York, March is a month when anything can happen. There have been Marches when a lot of the month was spent in the 70s and even 80s – think back to 1998! There have also been Marches filled with snow. The most recent years when that was the case include 2004, 2008, and 2018.
This March, or at least the start of it, looks to be about average. That means our temperature will sit in the mid to upper 30s. Just like we’ve seen happen over the past few days, ice on Lake Erie will continue to break apart. Typically, it does not fully melt away and diminish until the middle of April or into May.
The lake, as you know, plays a huge part in controlling not only the temperature in and around Western New York. It also controls whether lake-effect snow or rain will develop.
All that said, spring will slowly meander into the area rather than come all at once (like I had hoped). Maybe that provides more truth to the "in like a lion, out like a lamb" folklore.
