The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of New York say a lawyer for the convicted leader of the alleged cult NXIVM has applied to be an assistant U.S. attorney for that office.

Keith Raniere was convicted of a number of charges including sex trafficking and forced labor by prosecutors from the Eastern District back in June.

Federal prosecutors say Teny Geragos, the member of the defense team applying for the job, is not lead counsel for Raniere so, they say, the posibility of her making a decision that would hurt Raniere but please the government is unlikely.

However, the U.S. Attorney's Office wants the judge to make sure Raniere understands the conflict and makes the decision himself.

Raniere was originally scheduled to be sentenced later this month, but that has been delayed to allow the probation department have more time preparing pre-sentencing reports.

A new date for sentencing has not be set.
