The countdown has begun to that annual Thanksgiving tradition known as the Troy Turkey Trot.

Only you won’t spot hundreds of participants running in the streets of the Collar City for the 73rd edition of the trot.

In fact, organizers don't want that due to COVID-19 concerns.

So runners will instead experience the first “cutting-edge virtual Trot experience,” as Troy Mayor Patrick Madden called it.

Registrants can sign up for the 5K, 10K, the mile Turkey Walk, and the Grade School Mile, and use the Turkey Trot’s custom app to run, trot or walk any time from Thanksgiving through Saturday.

“The health and well-being of runners is our primary concern and moving to a virtual event for 2020 will ensure the traditions and excitement of the Troy Turkey Trot can continue during this unprecedented public health emergency,” Madden said.

What hasn't changed is the community spirit surrounding the event. A costume contest and donation drives for the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York and Joseph’s House & Shelter, Inc., are planned.
