Gov. Andrew Cuomo has announced the state will adopt the new CDC guidance allowing fully vaccinated New Yorkers to take off their masks indoors.

This guidance will go into effect starting on Wednesday.

“If you are vaccinated, you are safe, no masks, no social distancing,” Gov. Cuomo said. “The whole point of the CDC's change, the whole point of our change is to say to people, there are benefits to being vaccinated.”

People must continue to wear masks while on mass transit, in schools, health care facilities and homeless shelters.

The CDC issued guidance last Thursday allowing fully vaccinated adults to go without a mask inside. Gov. Cuomo at the time said the state needed to discuss this guidance with health experts before implementing its own rules.

A bipartisan group of county executives over the weekend called for Cuomo to lift the mask mandate for fully vaccinated New Yorkers.

The lifting of the mask mandate coincides with other restrictions being lifted Wednesday. Capacity restrictions for restaurants and bars are also being lifted on May 19.
