School districts are still in need of bus drivers — a lot of them.

Eight out of 10 districts are bracing for a driver shortage, according to a New York State School Boards Association survey.

Those who lead school bus fleets know the job isn't easy. Split workdays and the rising challenge of getting a commercial driver's license don't make it any easier.

“We have an extensive training program, so our driver trainers start from the beginning with our new trainees once they have their permit," said Laura D'Arcangelis, Liverpool School District transportation Director. "They practice intensely to get their drivers license."

Drivers also must learn the mechanics of the vehicle so they can check them each day to ensure they're working properly.
