Q: What becomes of E-ZPasses and remaining balances that tag holders have in their account when the new system is operational?

A: When the cashless tolling system is operational by the end of 2020, E-ZPass customers will see no change in the way they are billed. The only difference is they will be driving under high-speed gantries instead of through toll booths. Vehicles with E-ZPass tags are automatically charged and vehicles without E-ZPass tags will have their license plate image captured and a toll bill mailed to the registered owner. Customers who pay using Tolls By Mail will pay the same toll rate paid by cash customers.

An important note, because there will no longer be toll booths, light indicators will also be going away. For example, E-ZPass customers will no longer see a warning saying their account is low. We encourage all E-ZPass customers to log onto their account on e-zpassny.com or call 1-800-333-8655 to sign up for e-mail and/or text alerts. This will notify customers if their account is low, credit card is expiring, or other important messages.
