Taxpayers in the North Syracuse Central School district could be catching a break, to the tune of $20 million.

The state senate has passed a bill granting penalty relief to the district.

North Syracuse was assessed millions of dollars in penalties for filing late reports on capital projects, to be paid over 10 years.

The district said it would pay in part through its fund balance, but the potential budget impact down the line was unclear.

State Senator John DeFrancisco says North Syracuse would never be able to raise the money without impacting the quality of education. He says the penalties are outrageous and not reasonable.

The bill now moves to the state assembly for their consideration.
