Syracuse University Chancellor Kent Syverud announced Monday morning that the university has hired former United States Attorney General Loretta Lynch to lead an independent, expedited review of the Department of Public Safety as one of the steps it is taking to address issues with diversity, inclusion, and safety on campus.

Following last week's sit-in by the group #NotAgainSU, there were accusations that DPS mishandled the situation.

"I am not proud of how last week’s events involving student protesters in Crouse-Hinds Hall were handled,” Syverud said in a statement. “I take responsibility and apologize to the students — especially those misidentified in suspension letters sent out. I apologize also to our broader community for how this has distracted from the good work that has been done since November."

Along with the review of DPS, Syverud announced two more measures. He's asking for faculty and deans to have greater involvement, oversight and authority around how protests are handled. And finally, he is directing an independent review of the Student Experience function.

As far as cracking down on the hate crimes and graffiti on campus, Syverud said the university has identified three students for hateful acts so far, and is making progress on other cases.
